Inspired by Sunshine

One of the things I enjoy about being a ‘Teaching Artist’ for the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art is the variety of people I get to meet and work with. Every residency is a unique and rewarding experience.

Last summer my SAMA liaison, Jess Campbell, and I met with other board members of the Carrolltown Library to discuss a residency. They wanted to find a way to honor former member, Arlene Haley, who had passed away. She had been a guiding force in the revitalization of the library. In listening to anecdotes about her, it was revealed that sunshine had been an inspiration for her. It became the guiding theme for the children’s library project. As a mixed media fiber artist, I was asked to create an art quilt with a sun theme that would be appealing to children.

As every artist knows, it all begins with a sketch. As vague as my little design above may seem, I could envision it as a 4′ x 6′ art quilt of hand-painted fabrics.

Children’s book illustrator, Eric Carle, and the technique of mosaics would further inspire me.

In January, members of the Carrolltown and surrounding communities braved snowy roads to come to the library to paint fabrics for use in the project and silk hoops to take home. Some examples are shown above.

During February I painted and printed more fabrics as needed.

Step-by-step assembly of the sun design.

March was dedicated to pinning and attaching all the fabrics, then machine sewing and quilting. (Somehow I was able to squeeze the quilt into my sewing machine!)

In the spring it was finally finished.

The sun quilt now as it hangs in the library. Thank you, Arlene Haley, for your inspiration!
