My Own Creative Cave

sept-blog-5I am now realizing that I can make art every day! It is wonderful to be able to tap into the right brain and not have to think about grading programs or seating charts. I can experiment, grow and creatively play in “my basement” studio. When I was growing up the basement was where I was allowed to use my art supplies, and this area became my ‘studio’ where ever I lived. It is sort of like my own cave of creativity.  Cave man move over…here comes cave woman!

Currently this cave gal is making yards of deconstructed silk screened fabric. Final goal with these – unknown.  They may remain in one piece or be cut apart.  They may be printed over with more designs or colors. They may be laminated onto a canvas and painted or collaged on. They may be part of an art quilt. Not gonna worry about that now……for now it’s all about making marks and having fun! Below is a sequence from a printing session.

Above is an image that has been painted onto the silkscreen fabric with dye paste and allowed to dry. I will be reactivating it with clear seaweed paste to print it on fabric.  I have 5 different versions of this plant theme prepared and ready to print.

I’m just printing images from different positions.  The images on the silkscreen will change each time I print it. Eventually they will disappear form the silkscreen.

This one is done for now and will have to sit for a few days to cold cure (to allow the chemicals in the fiber-reactive dyes to bond with the soda ash I pre-soaked the fabric in…a little left brain chemistry here.)

Next a few closeups of some of the marks and textures that I love about this process!

The depth in the design is gorgeous, and I love the shadings.

Thanks, Marie! I can’t believe I finally made it to retirement in one piece.
